Design

At Great Heath Academy we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport.

Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as celebrating their own successes. Our curriculum promotes the holistic development of each child through enriching their social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth.

We strive to educate our children, staff and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children’s well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

Delivery

We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and the mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and as an adult.

We ensure all our pupils have at least two PE sessions per week and participate in a wide range of local competitive sporting events including football, gymnastics, cricket, tennis and athletics. We arrange for our KS2 children to learn to swim at an excellent local pool.

We have the use of a sports hall complete with changing facilities for our older pupils and a superb field which can accommodate up to 4 7-a-side football pitches and even has an all weather cricket wicket! We have different sports marked out on our field throughout the year including a running track in the summer for our annual sports day. We are also an active member of the Forest Heath Schools Sports Partnership and allow our facilities to be used for hosting many cluster events.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. At Great Heath we use summative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers planning. Each part of the PE curriculum is reviewed on a termly basis by the subject leader.
