English
In our English lessons this year, we will be focussing on a variety of texts including; ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis, ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes, ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl and ‘Flat Stanley’ by Jeff Brown. Some genres of writing we will be exploring are diary entries, formal/informal letter writing, descriptions and non-chronological reports.
Maths
In Maths, we will be following the White Rose scheme which looks at breaking down the topics and mastering the skills needed, such as telling the time and identifying amounts of money. We follow a system of using concrete resources (dienes, place value grids etc) to embed the new learning and then apply this to pictorial representations before moving to abstract number sentences.
We will be concentrating on the 3, 4 and 8 times table to prepare them for the Year 4 Multiplication Check and revising the previously taught 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Through the Ages
Our topic ‘Through the Ages’ will have a History focus. Within these lessons, we will be looking at the impact of the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages on Great Britain. We will be exploring geographical aspects of the United Kingdom, identifying countries and capital cities with a particular focus on Suffolk. In this term, we will create stone age pottery, look at how healthy eating affects our body and create their own healthy meal.
PE
Our PE days in Lightning are Thursday’s and Friday’s. Please remember that PE kit should be in a named bag and brought into school on a Monday. These will be sent home at the end of the week.
Homework
As always, we encourage you to read regularly at home with your child. This could be their AR book, library book or any other book, magazine or text. Please continue to sign your child’s log book every time they read.
All homework will be set on a FRIDAY and due the following THURSDAY. This will include:
Weekly spellings.
Set times tables using TTRockstars.
A home learning project which we hope you will enjoy supporting your child with.
