Design

Science changes our lives and is vital to the world’s future welfare. At Great Heath Academy we aim to give children a strong understanding of the world around them and foster their natural curiosity. We encourage children to build on this curiosity through learning about global influential scientists and their impact on the world. The designed curriculum does not only teach children about the world they live in, but also how to observe, research, analyse and use prior knowledge: key skills that are instrumental in making sense of various phenomena. As such, it is a fundamental aspect of all children’s learning.

Delivery

The Science curriculum is taught through our topics (Shown in the route plan). Each topic follows the National Curriculum for Science where teaching and learning shows progression across all key stages within the strands of Science. Within each topic the pupils explore key vocabulary and meanings that are related to the Science that is being taught. Pupils will have the opportunity to use a range of resources to develop their knowledge and understanding which is important in promoting their understanding of working scientifically. Practical investigative opportunities are carefully incorporated within the Science topics to enable children to further develop their practical skills. Pupils will reflect on previous learning and will be able to build on prior knowledge and link ideas together, enabling them to question and become enquiry based learners.

Impact

Most pupils will achieve age related expectations in Science at the end of the year. Pupils’ Science skills and knowledge will progress throughout the school as they improve their  understanding and skills. They will retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context. Attainment is assessed through teacher assessment, work and quizzes. Pupils will be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
